My Favorite Things

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens.  Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens... Have you begun humming along with me yet?

This week marks the 50th anniversary of The Sound of Music and while I can't remember when I first viewed this beloved musical, I do know that since childhood it has woven through the ribbons of my memories.  Its popularity continues fifty years later, enchanting new audiences every year.  Have any of us who have children not sat and watched it with them at least once?

Brown paper packages tied up with strings.  These are a few of my favorite things...

There have been many articles written this week commemorating The Sound of Music's 50th anniversary.  Some especially entertaining ones can be found here and here, so I won't reiterate what has already been written.  Instead, I'd like to honor this lovely musical in my own way, by sharing a list of my favorite things.

walks with my Popeye on winter mornings the warmth of the sun on my face visits with my daughters, especially when we are all together under one roof quiet dinners with my husband, sharing a bottle of wine and chatting, catching up on our days. laughing with friends, finding commonalities in our life stories making connections with others, marveling at the smallness of our world large family gatherings, where one has to shout to be heard above the happy chatter small moments, such as... ...chopping vegetables to be used in a soup ...sipping hot chai, spiced with cinnamon ...curling up on the couch, with a good book on my lap ...early mornings, when the only sound is a bird whispering a promise of spring ...the stillness that settles upon the earth during a snowfall ...the fullness of my heart when he makes me laugh ...snail mail bringing news from family and friends miles away ...the taste of chocolate ...releasing into a deep yoga stretch ...singing ...sharing ...remembering...
