My art and writing are two channels I use to express gratitude for all the goodness in my life.  Being creative requires me to step out of my comfort zone and explore new avenues.  When I write and paint from the heart, everything makes sense.  I am grateful for the opportunity to share my joy with you.

Summer and Looking Ahead

Summer and Looking Ahead

Beauty surrounds us, but usually we need to be walking in a garden to know it. ~ Rumi

Hello, it's been a while, hasn't it?  It isn't that my summer has been particularly busy, it's just that I've been more engaged with the world around me rather than with social media.

This is good, yes?  I think so.

I've made an effort this past month to get out into my community more frequently.  To shop locally at the farm market and small natural foods store, to take walks with Popeye, to make plans with friends.  I've joined not one but two book clubs (the second club focuses on YA novels), and have reconnected with a few dear friends.  And other than my apprehension about turning 60 (you can read about it here), I have been happy.

Which brings me to Rumi's quote.   This summer I have become so aware of the beauty in my life. Not just the beauty found in family and friendships but the beauty that is everywhere, from the ancient trees that shade our home, to the comfort of mementos and pictures that surround me in every room. Open windows on a summer day allowing the scent of basil and oregano to drift into the kitchen.  The coolness of the hardwood floors beneath my bare feet and the dappled afternoon light that tumbles into the living room.

It is all so beautiful.

Everything that is made beautiful and fair and lovely is made for the eye of one who sees. ~ Rumi

Spending time simply paying attention, of being mindful, has opened my eyes to all that is beautiful and fair and lovely surrounding me.  The way the impatiens reflect the moonlight, and the sound of soft hoot-hoot-hooting from an owl in the wood.  The resilience of the lavender and clematis during the hot, summer days.  Working with the heat of summer instead of fighting against it, tending the garden in the cool of the morning and seeking shade during the heat of the afternoon.

What beauty are you noticing this summer?

Hear blessings dropping their blossoms around you. ~ Rumi

Looking ahead...

I am so excited about this Friday's Book Talk interview with Camille DeAngelis.  Camille is an author and vegan who has published a number of books, including Bones and All, The Boy from Tomorrow, and Life Without Envy:  Ego Management for Creative People.  Be sure to stop by!

I will be taking a break from posting for the remainder of August so that I may revamp the direction I would like to take with my blog.  When I first created {whimsy&joy} it was with the thought that I would also be selling my artwork from the site.  I have since realized that I do not want to get caught up in the world of promoting and marketing my work; rather, I want to paint from the heart when the desire strikes me.  For the time being I will still have my little Etsy shop, and you can find prints and notecards of my work there.  {whimsy&joy} will return in September, hopefully with a new look!  🙂
